Hollywood star Nicolas Cage, nearly lost his swanky beachfront Malibu mansion, after a massive sinkhole formed ouside his property.
Sinkhole forms outside Nicolas Cage’s house
According to reports, the actor’s driveway collapsed into a 30-by-30-foot sinkhole, with officials investigating possible coastal erosion as the cause of the collapse. Photos of the scene, acquired by AP, show a deep cavity formed in the driveway of the 4,000-square-foot beachfront property.According to reports on various entertainment portals, sections of asphalt and concrete broke away near the enclosed garage, with large chunks of debris sinking into the deep hole. A construction-site portable toilet and what appear to be fragments of a privacy fence were also reportedly swallowed into the hole.
Gas leak reported in area
As per AP, the collapse caused a gas leak just before 6 am (local time), prompting authorities and a utility to respond. Utility SoCalGas said the leak was under control several hours later, but that it was temporarily shutting off natural gas services for an 85-foot section of the street as a precaution.As per Page Six, orange safety cones were also placed around the edges of the damaged property, while workers wearing safety vests were photographed assessing the scene. A firetruck was also seen near the residence.
City bars entry into 5 homes
The property sits directly along the Malibu coastline, with views of the Pacific Ocean and the beach visible behind the home. Photos from the site show a red notice stuck on the wall deeming it ‘unsafe’. As per reports, the city of Malibu has also prohibited entry to five homes on the street, officials said in a statement.Despite the scale of the collapse, authorities have not ordered evacuations. It was also unclear whether anyone was inside the property when the ground caved in. According to KTLA reporter Rich Prickett, no one appeared to be at home at the time of the incident.

The private neighbourhood sits between the ocean and the iconic Pacific Coast Highway. Cage reportedly purchased the Malibu property in 2024 for an estimated USD 10.5 million, according to Realtor.com.The contemporary-style home, built in 1994, spans approximately 4,000 square feet and features four bedrooms and six bathrooms. The beachfront property has direct access to the beach and sweeping ocean views, according to Architectural Digest.The home includes a rare rooftop deck, which features multiple lounge areas, a dining table and a blue-tiled hot tub. The property is accessed through a courtyard that opens onto a spacious ocean-facing patio.The residence has four levels. The first-floor living room features a fireplace and floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the ocean.The second level houses an eat-in chef’s kitchen with updated appliances and a distinctive curved black-and-white island designed to echo the wavy silhouette. The third-floor primary suite includes a private deck, fireplace and bathroom with a sunken bathtub and dusty-rose-coloured tilework.The actor has owned several high-value properties during his career, but his Malibu residence was particularly notable for its beachfront setting.
