NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi offered water bottles to police personnel while being detained during the opposition’s protest in Delhi on Wednesday. Handing out the water bottles he was seen telling them, “You are all doing your work”.Rahul was later released from Barakhamba Road police station, where he had been taken after police stopped opposition leaders from proceeding towards Jantar Mantar.Rahul Gandhi was among several opposition leaders and MPs detained as they attempted to reach the designated protest site to protest against chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. The leaders alleged that police stopped their buses and prevented them from moving towards Jantar Mantar.

Priyanka Gandhi alleges MPs were manhandled

The confrontation saw several opposition leaders detained, including Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien and RJD MP Manoj Kumar Jha. Priyanka Gandhi alleged that police personnel manhandled MPs during the confrontation.“This is how they treat Members of Parliament who are asking simply to meet the election commissioner. This is how they treat us. They are beating MPs. The Policemen have scratched me all over. They have thrown us to the ground. Now, we are not going to move from here. Let them crawl their forces back. I will not move from here.”Priyanka Gandhi and other detained leaders were later taken to Chhatrasal Stadium. She said the opposition would continue to defend the Constitution.“What is the value of the Constitution in this nation? We will lay down our lives for the Constitution. No cost is too big for us”

Opposition protest followed Kharge’s lunch meeting

The protest followed a lunch meeting hosted by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge for opposition MPs. Rahul Gandhi had announced that the MPs would move to Jantar Mantar after they were denied permission to protest at the Election Commission office.Kharge said the opposition would continue its agitation despite cases being filed against its leaders.
