Twinkle Khanna has once again put her sharp comic voice to good use, this time turning her attention to the buzz surrounding food safety raids led by Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe. The former actress and author shared an excerpt from her latest Mrs Funnybones column on Instagram, offering her signature satirical take on the ongoing crackdown.
Twinkle Khanna takes a satirical dig at the FDA crackdown
In a series of slides posted on August 30, Twinkle referenced restaurant closures, the suspension of a Domino’s outlet, and the growing unease among eateries following Mundhe’s inspections. Her note read, “In the good old days, when I went to melas rather than acting in one, buddhi ke baal used to be a fluorescent pink. Now, it is the colour of my roots between touch-ups, finally living up to its name. The disappearance of pink dye is due to FDA commissioner Tukaram Mundhe. Hundreds of restaurants have fallen like dominoes in his wake, including Domino’s. Where Mundhe goes, mundis roll.”
Twinkle Khanna imagines a food safety raid at home
Bringing the humour closer to home, Twinkle imagined what an inspection of her own kitchen might turn up, joking about stumbling upon a long-expired spice packet. “Inspired by Mr Mundhe, I conduct a raid on my kitchen. I find a packet of Shahi Masala that expired around the same time as the Mughal Empire. Those who want to erase the Mughals from our history books should first start with lunch. Give up your koftas, kormas, kebabs. You can’t have your Mughlai paneer, real or analogue, and eat it too,” she wrote.
Twinkle’s ‘Mundhe’s Martini’ joke takes the satire further
The column then shifts scenes to a restaurant, where Twinkle jokingly checks whether the eatery had passed Mundhe’s inspection before placing her order — a bit that eventually spirals into an unexpected cocktail moment. “We order tandoori broccoli and chicken tikka. Then I ask the server, ‘Has Mundhe checked your restaurant?’ ‘Yes, madam, last week. We passed.’ ‘Then I can order the paneer tikka without fear.’ Our drinks arrive first, followed by the starters. I stab my paneer with a toothpick. Before it can reach my mouth, it collapses and falls into my martini. I consider asking for a new drink. Then I decide it’s an appropriate toast. I christen it Mundhe’s Martini. Gin, vermouth, olive and paneer. Shaken, not stirred,” she wrote. With her trademark playful style, Twinkle managed to turn a serious civic conversation around food safety and restaurant inspections into a string of witty, relatable observations that quickly resonated online.
