NEW DELHI: CPI and CPM on Sunday reiterated that it is not in alliance with Vijay’s TVK in Tamil Nadu and said that they will contest one assembly segment each in the upcoming bypolls in the state.CPI state secretary M Veerapandian, while talking to reporters, said that CPI will fight from Dharapuram, the CPM will contest from Maduranthakam in the October 6 bypolls.Veerapandian said the October 6 byelections in the state are “imposed,” and not a natural outcome.“We have conveyed our opinion (to fight polls) to the CPI-M and it has also taken the same stand; the CPI will contest from Dharapuram,” he added.This comes days after CPM and CPI boycotted a formal alliance with TVK.Tamil Nadu chief minister and TVK chief C Joseph Vijay named his alliance with the Congress, VCK, MDMK and IUML the “Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance”Explaining the decision, CPM state secretary P Shanmugam said that the Left parties’ outside support would remain strictly issue-based, with the aim of maintaining stability in the assembly.

“It is a meeting of TVK’s alliance partners. But there is no change in our stand to extend external support to TVK govt,” Shanmugam said after CPI and CPM skipped the meeting of `friendly parties’ convened by TVK.The Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance will be the third major political front in Tamil Nadu, alongside the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance.The upcoming Dharapuram and Maduranthagam bypolls are expected to be the first electoral test for the newly formed front, setting the stage for a three-cornered contest among the three alliances.
