Kudzu arrived in the United States as an ornamental vine more than a century ago, first displayed at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876 before being promoted for shade, livestock forage and erosion control. What began as a useful garden and agricultural plant eventually spread far beyond where it was intended, covering forests, roadsides and abandoned farmland across the South. Today, researchers are examining another consequence of its dense growth. The US Forest Service says dry kudzu litter can add substantial fuel to dormant-season fires, while vines growing into forest canopies may provide ladder fuels that allow flames to move upwards. Scientists caution that the specific effect of kudzu on wildfire behaviour remains insufficiently studied, but its ability to connect different layers of vegetation has emerged as a reason for concern.

How a garden plant became wildfire fuel in America

Kudzu, scientifically known as Pueraria montana var. lobata, is native to Asia and was introduced to the US in 1876 as an ornamental vine. USDA Forest Service records say it was used to shade porches and courtyards before becoming popular as livestock forage and later as a tool against soil erosion. During the 1930s and 1940s, federal programmes distributed millions of kudzu seedlings across the South and farmers were offered financial incentives to plant it. The plant’s rapid growth eventually became a liability. It can produce vines up to about 30 centimetres a day under favourable conditions and can grow through several layers of a forest canopy before overtopping trees. By the 1950s, the government had begun withdrawing its support and kudzu was increasingly recognised as a serious weed.

Scientists are looking at what happens when kudzu enters forests

The wildfire concern begins with the way kudzu changes the structure of an invaded forest. Rather than remaining on the ground, the vine can climb shrubs and mature trees, forming dense layers of vegetation and eventually covering the canopy. A 2024 study by Ming Shen, Maofeng Tang, Wenzhe Jiao and Yingkui Li used satellite imagery to examine kudzu invasion in Knox County, Tennessee, and found that heavily invaded areas were concentrated along highways, riversides and the edges of urban forests. The researchers also found that kudzu expanded through the warmer months before rapidly losing foliage in autumn. That seasonal cycle matters because the plant can leave behind dry material as temperatures fall, potentially changing the amount and arrangement of fuel in landscapes where the vine has become established.

The wildfire concern is about ladder fuels

The key scientific concept is ladder fuel, vegetation that creates a vertical connection between fuels on the ground and those in the tree canopy. The US Forest Service explains that fuels occur in different layers, including surface, ladder and canopy fuels, and that their arrangement can influence fire behaviour and spread. Its technical guidance specifically lists vines and lianas such as kudzu as a type of ladder fuel when they create vertical continuity between lower vegetation and tree crowns. This does not mean every kudzu patch will produce a crown fire. Instead, the concern is that a dense infestation climbing from the forest floor into trees can create one of the conditions that make upward fire spread more possible.

Dry kudzu can add more fuel to the forest

There is an important distinction between living kudzu and the dead material it leaves behind. Green kudzu contains substantial water and is not necessarily easy to ignite. The US Forest Service says green foliage probably does not burn well because of its high water content. The situation can change after vegetation dies back. Dense kudzu litter can provide substantial fuel for dormant-season surface fires, while dead woody vegetation beneath heavily invaded areas can add further combustible material. The agency also warns that kudzu growing into forest canopies may provide ladder fuels that increase the potential for crown fires. However, the Forest Service describes these effects as scenarios that were still speculative in its assessment and says additional research is needed to establish how kudzu changes the fire ecology of invaded forests.

New fire research shows why vertical fuel is important

Recent research into ladder fuels strengthens the scientific basis for understanding this mechanism, even though it was not conducted specifically on kudzu. A 2026 study published in Fire Ecology examined ladder-fuel ignition through 92 controlled experiments involving live manzanita and incense cedar foliage and branches positioned above a surface fire. Researchers including Yucheng He and US Forest Service scientist David R. Weise found that ignition probability was influenced by factors including temperature, fuel characteristics and the height of the ladder fuel above the surface fire. The study showed why vertical fuel continuity matters in wildfire behaviour. It cannot be used to claim that kudzu itself was proven to ignite forest canopies, but it provides experimental evidence for the broader fire mechanism that makes climbing vines such as kudzu a concern.

Kudzu can survive fire and return quickly

Fire also does not necessarily solve the kudzu problem. The US Forest Service says the plant can survive fire through its underground root crowns and can resprout after burning. In some documented cases, kudzu returned to its previous level of dominance by the second growing season after a dormant-season fire. The agency also notes that dry kudzu litter can contribute to dormant-season surface fires and that heat from fire may potentially encourage germination by breaking seed dormancy, although the importance of this process in natural landscapes remains uncertain. This creates a difficult management problem because burning an infestation may remove vegetation above ground without eliminating the established root system that allows kudzu to return.

A 600-acre wildfire exposed the concern

The issue gained a real-world dimension in western North Carolina in March 2025, when a power line brought down by strong winds sparked a wildfire near Tryon. The blaze ultimately burned more than 600 acres, according to reporting cited by Inside Climate News. The incident is important to the kudzu story, but the distinction over cause matters. Kudzu did not ignite the fire and should not be described as the cause. The ignition came from the power line. The concern was what happened after ignition in a landscape where kudzu had formed extensive vegetation. Fire behaviour depends on fuel quantity, moisture, arrangement and connectivity, making dense climbing vegetation relevant to the way a fire can move through a forest.

Scientists are not saying kudzu causes wildfires

The evidence does not support a simple claim that kudzu causes wildfires. Instead, the concern is that large infestations can alter the fuel structure of a forest. Chelsea Nagy of the University of Colorado Boulder, quoted by Inside Climate News, explained that fuel amount, structure, connectivity and moisture all influence fire risk. That principle is consistent with the broader US Forest Service description of wildfire fuels. Kudzu becomes particularly interesting because it can occupy the ground layer while climbing into shrubs and trees, potentially connecting fuel layers that would otherwise be more separated. The US Forest Service, however, has explicitly said that the specific effects of kudzu on fire regimes require further research. That uncertainty should remain part of any assessment of the plant’s wildfire threat.

Volunteers are removing the vine from forests

While scientists continue to examine the fire implications, conservation groups are already tackling kudzu on the ground. At Norman Wilder Forest near Tryon, North Carolina, the Kudzu Warriors, a volunteer group organised through Conserving Carolina, have been removing the invasive vine since 2011. Volunteers follow vines back to their root crowns and dig them out, because cutting the visible growth alone can allow the plant to regenerate. Conserving Carolina says large parts of the 185-acre preserve that were once covered by kudzu are now free of the vine, with native wildflowers and other vegetation returning. The organisation continues to hold Kudzu Warriors workdays at the forest, showing that the restoration effort remains active rather than being a one-time project.

Removing kudzu restores more than the forest floor

The restoration work offers a wider ecological benefit than simply removing a potentially hazardous fuel. Conserving Carolina reports that areas once covered by solid mats of kudzu at Norman Wilder Forest now support native vegetation, while restoration projects have included planting native prairie plants and grasses in areas cleared of the vine. Removing kudzu allows sunlight and growing space to return to plants that had been suppressed by the invasive species. It can also remove dense mats of vegetation and dead material from the landscape. While there is not enough evidence to claim that every kudzu removal project will measurably reduce wildfire risk, reducing an invasive vine’s dominance can simultaneously address habitat degradation and one potential source of connected fuel.

The fight is difficult because kudzu keeps coming back

Kudzu is notoriously difficult to eradicate once it becomes established. Its large underground root system stores energy that allows the plant to recover after cutting, grazing or fire. The US Forest Service says complete eradication requires killing all major and minor root crowns and notes that well-established stands can require many years of treatment. Conserving Carolina’s experience shows why repeated work is necessary. Its Kudzu Warriors have spent years removing the vine from Norman Wilder Forest, and the organisation continues to describe the fight as ongoing even after substantial areas have been restored. That long-term approach is important because preventing a dense infestation from returning may be more realistic than expecting a single treatment to eliminate the plant permanently.

An old garden plant has become a modern fire-management concern

Kudzu’s journey from ornamental vine to invasive species shows how dramatically the consequences of introducing a plant can change over time. It was first welcomed in the US for its attractive growth and shade, later promoted as forage and erosion control, and eventually recognised as an invasive plant capable of overwhelming native vegetation. Now, its dense growth is drawing attention from fire scientists and land managers because dry litter can add fuel and vines extending into tree canopies can potentially create ladder-fuel connections. The evidence does not show that kudzu independently causes wildfires, and researchers still need more direct studies of kudzu’s effects on fire behaviour. But the mechanism is scientifically plausible, the US Forest Service explicitly identifies kudzu as a potential ladder fuel, and recent experiments demonstrate why vertical fuel connections matter. That makes controlling dense kudzu infestations relevant not only to ecological restoration but also to the broader challenge of managing wildfire fuels.
