The Delhi high court sought responses from the Centre and the Delhi government on a PIL seeking urgent medical intervention for climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar since June 28.The plea urged the authorities to shift Wangchuk to a government hospital and provide medically supervised treatment, including force-feeding if required. Wangchuk joined protests demanding Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation over alleged irregularities in NEET and other competitive examinations. Trinamool Congress MLA Madan Mitra resigned from the Mamata Banerjee-led faction and joined the rebel TMC camp headed by Ritabrata Banerjee, adding to a series of defections from the former chief minister’s camp.Speaking after switching sides, Mitra criticised Abhishek Banerjee, alleging that the party had become centred around one individual despite facing a political crisis. The development came a day after the Enforcement Directorate summoned Mitra’s wife and two sons in connection with its money laundering probe into the alleged West Bengal municipal recruitment scam. Cabinet approves seven major projects worth Rs 2.19 lakh crore
The Union Cabinet approved seven major decisions covering infrastructure, semiconductor manufacturing, mobile phone production, fertiliser and railway projects, with a combined outlay of Rs 2,19,353 crore.The package includes the Semicon 2.0 Mission, the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme and the National Investment Policy for Urea-2026. The Cabinet also cleared major infrastructure projects in Varanasi, including new road corridors and approved railway expansion works in Odisha and Jharkhand. The decisions were announced after the Cabinet and CCEA meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Read full story
US launches fresh strikes on Iran, targets military sites near Strait of Hormuz
The United States launched another wave of strikes against Iran, targeting military infrastructure on Greater Tunb Island and other coastal locations near the Strait of Hormuz.According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the attacks targeted coastal defence systems, missile launch sites, drones and naval capabilities to reduce Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping. ICC approves new ODI, T20 World Cup formats ahead of 2028 tournament
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved major changes to the formats of the men’s ODI and T20 World Cups, introducing new competition structures aimed at making matches more competitive from the opening stages.The 14-team ODI World Cup will feature a three-stage format before the semi-finals, while the 20-team T20 World Cup will include a new Super 10 stage followed by eliminators.
