Australia get Cameron Green boost ahead of series-deciding Test against South Africa, set to return as specialist batter

Australia have received a timely boost ahead of the series-deciding third Test against South Africa, with all-rounder Cameron Green declaring himself fit for the Cape Town encounter. However, the 27-year-old is expected to return as a specialist batter, having yet to receive clearance to bowl following an abdominal muscle injury.Green’s availability comes at a crucial juncture for Australia, who suffered a heavy defeat in the second Test to allow South Africa to level the three-match series at 1-1. With the series on the line, the visitors will hope his return strengthens a batting order that struggled in Gqeberha.

Green prefers No. 4 or 5, but remains flexible

Green has identified No. 4 or No. 5 as his preferred batting positions, although he remains willing to adapt to the team’s requirements.“I think I’m well suited at four and five,” Green said, while adding that he was happy to move up and down the order depending on what Australia needed. The all-rounder has batted at several positions during his international career, from No. 3 to No. 8. His experience in the middle order could prove valuable as Australia look to improve their batting performance in the series decider. However, Australia’s team combination remains a key consideration. Matt Renshaw impressed in the opening Test while filling in for Green, scoring 190 and 82, strengthening his claims for a place in the side. Green’s return could therefore prompt a reshuffle as the selectors weigh their options.

Green recovers quicker than expected from injury

Green sustained an abdominal muscle tear during Australia’s ODI series against South Africa on September 30. The injury ruled him out of the first two Tests, but his recovery has progressed faster than he initially anticipated.“I’m all good to go. Pretty surprised with how quickly it’s actually healed, or how functional I feel only a few weeks after,” Green said.Despite his improved fitness, Green has not yet been cleared to bowl. Australia are therefore likely to use him primarily for his batting contribution rather than as a full all-round option.

Australia and South Africa level at 1-1

Australia won the opening Test in Durban by 214 runs to take the early advantage in the series. Matt Renshaw starred with scores of 190 and 82, while Josh Hazlewood claimed six wickets for 49 runs in South Africa’s second innings.South Africa responded emphatically in the second Test at Gqeberha, winning by an innings and 31 runs to level the series. The hosts posted 425/9 declared in their first innings, led by captain Temba Bavuma’s 179 and a century from Tristan Stubbs.Australia were dismissed for 99 in their first innings before Travis Head’s 121 helped them reach 295 in the second, but it was not enough to prevent defeat. The third and final Test begins on October 27 at Newlands in Cape Town, with both teams chasing a series victory.
