'Tore Constitution to shreds': BJP president says anti-CEC protests by Congress undermined democracy

NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party president Nitin Nabin on Saturday launched a sharp attack on Congress for “challenging constitutional institutions” and accused it of lecturing the country about democracy after trying to finish it off by imposing Emergency.“Today in this country, discussions are being held, and attempts are being made to challenge constitutional institutions. Attempts are being made to challenge democracy. Those who invoke the Constitution today – if anyone has torn the pages of the Constitution to shreds the most, it is Congress and its stalwart leaders,” Nabin said while addressing the Jharkhand BJP executive meeting in Ranchi.“We have seen how President’s Rule was imposed in many states across the country, there was an era of Emergency, and whether it was any form of unethical decision-making process in the country, Congress never ran the country according to the Constitution, but tried to run the entire nation according to the rules of its own family,” he added.Earlier in the day, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad also targeted Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of rubbing salt into the wounds of the Sikh community by holding an INDIA bloc rally at Ramlila Maidan on November 1, the anniversary of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi following the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.Addressing a press conference, senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad questioned the Congress leader’s insistence on holding the rally on that date.“Why is Rahul Gandhi so adamant about holding his rally in Delhi on November 1? This issue is being raised very seriously by our party. November 1 is a day that holds deep emotional significance for the Sikh community, as they remember the 1984 massacre with profound sorrow,” Prasad said.
