BATHINDA: A number of social activists, rights activists mainly people of Punjab origin presently settled in Canada, remembered a noted social and rights activist Harbans Singh Bharowal in a memorial service at Brampton in Canada late Saturday evening. 68 years old Bharowal, chief editor of a monthly magazine Sarokaran Di Awaaz had passed away after a brief illness at Brampton on September 28. Another memorial has been planned by various farmers, left leaning organizations in Punjab on October 13. The activists recalled Bharowal spent his entire life for the social causes, agitations and struggles fought in Punjab and even while residing in Canada. He also contributed to the historic farmer struggle fought at the borders of Delhi in 2020-21.The memorial service was held immediately after his funeral at Brampton crematorium and visitation centre.Bharowal had worked in Punjab Students Union, Naujawan Bharat Sabha and worked as science teacher briefly before migrating to Canada in late 1980s.

Hailing from Dhurkot Ransih village in Moga, Harbans Singh had shifted to Bharowal Kalan village in Ludhiana to live with his aunt. He played a role in PSU after the infamous Moga Cinema agitation in 1972. He got involved in agitation against the hefty increase in bus fares in 1980.“After the formation of Congress government under Darbara Singh in 1980, the government increased bus fares by 43%. PSU and Naujawa Bharat Sabha started agitation against it wherein Harbans Singh was involved in deflating bus tyres on December 29, 1980 and held rallies”, recalls Inquilabi Kendra Punjab convener Kanwaljit Khanna.Khanna and Punjab lok sabhyacharak manch president Amolak Singh said the farmer, worker and left organizations including BKU Ekta Ugrahan, BKU Ekta Dakaunda have decided to hold a memorial service at Bharowal Kalan village on October 13 to recall his immense contribution in various agitations and struggles right from late 10970s to the present.
