East Bengal humiliate Mohun Bagan 4-1 to lift record-equalling 17th Durand Cup, Lalrindika stars with hat-trick

East Bengal produced a stunning performance to beat arch-rivals Mohun Bagan 4-1 and win the Durand Cup on Sunday.Edmund Lalrindika scored a hat-trick as East Bengal claimed their 17th title, drawing level with Mohun Bagan for the most trophies in the 135-year-old competition.

East Bengal dominate the derby

East Bengal came out firing and scored four goals in a remarkable first half. Bipin Singh opened the scoring in the 10th minute after being set up by captain Mohammed Rashid.Lalrindika then took over, scoring in the 12th and 22nd minutes to put East Bengal firmly in control. Mohun Bagan briefly gave their fans hope when Manvir Singh pulled one back in the 33rd minute.However, East Bengal quickly restored their three-goal advantage. Rashid provided another assist, this time for Lalrindika, who completed his hat-trick in the 44th minute.Playing as a lone striker in place of Jesin TK, Lalrindika delivered a memorable performance on the big stage.

East Bengal complete revenge

East Bengal remained organised and disciplined after the break, preventing Mohun Bagan from making a comeback. The victory also allowed them to avenge their 0-1 defeat to their rivals in the 2023 Durand Cup final.Coach Antonio Lopez Habas saw his side produce a controlled performance, with Rashid playing a key role in midfield and helping create East Bengal’s attacking opportunities.The result gives both Kolkata giants 17 Durand Cup titles each, making them joint record holders in the historic tournament. For East Bengal, it was a particularly memorable triumph after years of waiting to reclaim the trophy.
