'He took the bullet': Amaal Mallik on why Salman Khan sang 'Main Hoon Hero Tera'
Amaal Mallik revealed Salman Khan recorded his own version of ‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’ to shift focus away from negativity around ‘Hero’ co-stars Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty. Despite not being a singer, Salman insisted on singing it himself. The track was dubbed across eight locations using the same microphone.

Composer Amaal Mallik has revealed the reason behind Salman Khan‘s decision to record his version of ‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’ for the 2015 film ‘Hero’, which starred Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty.

Amaal Mallik recalls why Salman Khan decided to sing for ‘Hero’

In conversation with Mashable India, Amaal recalled that the original track, sung by his brother Armaan Malik, had already become a massive hit when it dropped alongside the film’s trailer. But as the film’s release neared, Salman, who had also co-produced ‘Hero’ with Subhash Ghai, chose to record a version of the song himself. Amaal shared, “The trailer came out with Armaan’s voice, and the song became a blockbuster. But when the film was released, there was a lot of negativity around it. Salman sir said, ‘I should do something to take the negativity away and put the focus on me, not Sooraj and Athiya.’ He has always been that kind of person. He took the bullet himself. He said, ‘I’ll come and sing the song. It should be the end-credit track because I’m introducing them, and I’m a hero too. I’m a hero, so I’ll sing it.’ Then he said, ‘Let’s dub my version and see how it turns out.'”

Amaal Mallik on Salman Khan saying he is “not a singer”

Amaal added that Salman never considered himself a singer but still chose to take on the responsibility of recording the track himself. “He would tell me, ‘I’m not a singer. You decide.’ But he had to take that call, and it turned out to be the right one.”

Amaal Mallik on the long recording process across eight locations

Amaal shared that recording Salman’s version turned out to be a long process spread across several locations. He revealed, “The first session was at Himesh Reshammiya’s studio, where we dubbed for three hours. The second was at Yash Raj Studios, the third at his farmhouse, the fourth on a film set. In total, we dubbed the song at eight different locations.” Sticking to the same microphone throughout, he added, “When you sing on different microphones, your voice changes. We were lucky because we used the same microphone every time.”

About the two versions of ‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’

‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’, composed by Amaal Mallik with lyrics by Kumaar, came in two official versions. The music video for Salman’s rendition showed the actor recording the track inside the studio.
