Temporary move: No slots next summer for 12 int’l carriers at CSMIA; can operate from Navi Mumbai

NEW DELHI: Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) has allocated slots to 38 of the 50 international airlines for summer 2027 schedule to operate to and from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). Twelve airlines have not been given CSMIA slots next summer. These 12 collectively operate about 16 daily flights to 14 international destinations. Sources say they can operate the affected services from Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA).This destination-based slot allocation is expected to leave about 91% of CSMIA’s existing traffic capacity unaffected, say sources, while adding that this is temporary arrangement to facilitate the redevelopment of Mumbai Airport’s old terminal 1. “Airlines’ historical slot allocations will be respected and left undisturbed during this temporary transition,” they add.Indian carriers — IndiGo, Air India and Akasa — have already announced plans to shift flights serving 14 destinations to NMIA. “The transition is expected to facilitate movement of about 50 lakh passengers annually from CSMIA to NMIA, creating the capacity required for the phased redevelopment of T1. The new terminal will increase T1’s annual passenger handling capacity from the existing 1.5 crore passengers per annum (CPA) to 2 CPA. Construction is scheduled to begin early next year, with the facility targeted to be operational by March 2029. The four-level extension will add four domestic bus boarding gates, along with expanded passenger processing, security screening and crew facilities,” sources say.
