“There are no words of comfort. There is absolutely nothing that can ease this overwhelming sense of sadness.”When the incident occurred, Tenerife and Andorra were tied 2-2 seven minutes into stoppage time. De Miguel chased a long ball that was lobbed into the opposite half but clashed with Owono, who had raced towards the halfway mark. The goalkeeper’s knee appeared to collide with the striker after which he fell, and lay motionless on the pitch. The incident will be a painful reminder for Indian football fans of a similar on-field clash, and death, when Dempo SC striker Cristiano Junior collided with Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Subrata Paul in the final of the Federation Cup in 2004. The match continued for the remaining 12 minutes while the Brazilian was taken to the hospital, where he was declared brought dead.Hailing from Madrid, De Miguel started his career at Leganes and went on to play for eight different lower-division clubs in Spain. He signed for Tenerife at the start of the 2025-26 season and scored 11 league goals in his first year, helping Tenerife win a long-awaited promotion to the Segunda Division. At the start of the season, he attracted interest from Mohun Bagan SG. The former Indian Super League champions and among the biggest spenders in India were on the hunt for a top-notch striker following the departure of former Australian World Cupper Jason Cummings.“We had a call with Jesus and his representative,” a senior Bagan official told TOI. “He said he was keen to come to India but there were two years remaining on his existing contract with Tenerife, so we could not make the transfer work. Jesus has scored consistently in the lower divisions in Spain and would have clicked in ISL.”Spanish police have opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter. They said on Tuesday that proceedings were opened and prosecutors will also be involved.Andorra, which is owned by former Barcelona star Gerard Pique, also offered its condolences, along with other clubs, the Spanish soccer federation and La Liga. “We wish to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Jesus de Miguel, to all his colleagues and friends, and to CD Tenerife. May he rest in peace,” Andorra said in a statement. The Real Madrid players held a minute’s silence for De Miguel during training, while Espanyol postponed the presentation of their new coach.
